Essay no.2

10.05.2018

My second essay was supposed to be  balanced argument about scientific discovery. My first initial pick was dynamite. But due to the fact I copied it in its entirety from internet, well you dont have to be sherlock to figure out the rest so I ve decided to write it here, and also change a topic from dynamite to artificial intelligence (AI). Now i know that AI doesnt exist, but as a theoretical topic, it is much more interesting than dynamite.

Balanced argument

Scientific discovery (Artifical inteligence)

Scientists have become the bearers of the torch of discovery in our quest for knowledge.

(Stephen Hawking)

While I completely agree with initial quote by Mr. Hawking, underneath this statement lies much more interesting question, is it good to have too much knowledge ? Is there a line where we should simply stop and live with what we have ? I chose AI as a topic because it demonstrates the power of this thought itself.

Everyday our society becomes  more and more computerized. In every branch of our everyday lives, Internet plays important role. From online bank account, to our jobs, to communication, pretty much everything is on grid these days. While internet is very convenient, its pretty much a double sided axe. If the grid decides to play dead, planes would suddenly lack navigation ( same goes for ships), all of our data (bank accounts, emails, work related paperwork etc) would suddenly be  unaccesible. We just cannot simply just turn back to live without internet. And during this times, some scientist creates an AI. Due to the fact AI is mostly computer based, imagine a being that can easily study our data, history of humanity, orbreak into any computer it wants ( I know this is all highly theoretical, but still). Creating an AI can have two possible outcomes. It could help to solve our problems, or destroy us completely. There is a vast chance that the moment an AI is created, we would not be able to understand it at all, since it can operate on completely different level than us and create its own consciousness that would be totally different from ours.

I guess what I am trying to say is, at one point we should stop thinking about the future, and start living in the present for a little bit. I mean, dont we have enough ? People are still trying to find out more about space, millions of dollars are spend monthly to build spaceships, while we cant solve a problem with food and oxygen level in our atmosphere. Engineers are trying to come up with  robots that could participate in war or repair underwater platforms for oil mining, while ignoring the fact that they could easily focus on building prosthesis that would act just like an arm for people who lost their limbs.  Instead of focusing on creating a safe, harmless fuels for a car, many chemical companies  avert their eyes and simply trying to come up with a cure for death ( satirical expression right here, buts it is pretty much true, instead of trying to came up with something that can actually help to solve our problem, they only create more problems by the fact that people simply live too long, and earth doesnt have that much resources for this way of living). In the end, I think that at one point we should  stop creating and start to enjoy what we have created. Beause if we reach the end of our road too fast, we might not like whats at the end a start realizing that that the road itself was much better and we did not enjoyed it properly.
